Phulkari, literally meaning the flower work as the entire field of cloth is embroidered and filled with flowers. It is an art form in which exquisite embroidery is done over shawls, dupattas and headscarves. It is woven with silk threads on a coloured cotton cloth. In some cases, the entire cloth is covered with dense designs, so that the ground cloth becomes invisible. The design is worked with small squares in step-ladder fashion. The colours used in this embroidery signified clear symbols, i.e. red colour was used to symbolise passion, yellow or golden for desire, white denoted purity, green for fertility and abundance, blue for calmness and orange symbolised divine energy.
