Sugarcane root borer damages the stem.
Polyocha depressella Swinhoe is the only species of borer infesting the underground portion of sugarcane and, hence, referred to by its common name root borer or rootstock borer.
It causes yellowing and wilting of leaves. Drying of the entire crown. Affected canes come off easily when pulled. Cause extensive damage to roots and base of shoot. It causes serious economic losses to sugarcane production.
