Barnala district was known as Anahadgarh and was founded by Baba Ala Singh who was the founder of Patiala state in 1772. Barnala was declared as district headquarters in Princely State System and it was later merged in PEPSU (Patiala and East Punjab States Union) and degraded as sub divisional headquarters. Barnala became a district on 19 November, 2006. It is the least populous district in the state.
