Sheikh Farid-ud-Din is known to be the first recorded poet in the Punjabi language. He was the disciple of Khwaja Qutb-ud-din Bakhtiyar Kaki, who himself was a disciple of Muinuddin Chisti, founder of the Chisti order. He acquired the title of 'Shakarganj' or 'Gangj-i-Shakar' (Treasury of Sugar).
